The cultivation and consumption of wine is intrinsically linked to Italian culture and so it’s no surprise that Italy is home to hundreds of autochthonous grape varieties. Amongst these, two red varieties are indisputably the country’s most revered: Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. Named after the fog (nebbia) that blankets the vineyards of Piedmont, Nebbiolo is most famously the grape of the Barolo and Barbaresco regions of northern Italy. Sangiovese, or in Italian “Blood of Jupiter” is the country’s most-planted variety and is synonymous with the Montalcino and Chianti regions of Tuscany. But the aforementioned wine zones are not the be-all and end-all of Nebbiolo and Sangiovese, as delights await beyond their borders.
Join Eva to wade through blood and fog, all whilst learning about the origins and traditions of these fascinating grape varieties.
